Triple Red Shells are items in Mario Kart Wii. They can home in on the opponent whose rank is one higher than the driver's. Red shells can be picked up in sets of one or three. When the triple variant is used, three Red Shells will rotate around the driver's kart (in Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7) protecting him or her from Bananas and other shells. In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, single Red Shells can be laid behind the player and will act as a land mine, chasing after the first kart that passes by. If the driver collides with another driver, he or she will be hit by one, and if the other driver also has another set of Triple Green Shells or Triple Red Shells, both drivers will lose shells. Like ordinary Red Shells, they home in on the driver who is a rank above the driver, but disappear as soon as it hits another object. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, they were a special item exclusive to Koopa Troopa and Paratroopa (and Petey Piranha and King Boo, due to their ability to have any special item). Also, in Double Dash!!, the three shells were carried in the hands rather than having them circling around the kart. Triple Red Shells are not used in Mario Kart DS Wi-Fi mode due to the fact that items cannot be equipped in that mode.
